What sets Goddess Locs and Boho Locs them apart? In this guide, we’ll explore their origins, main characteristics, and maintenance needs to help you choose the best style for you.

These differences are not exclusive to our locs, but just general terms. But double check if you are are getting your hair done by a stylist as they can name the style something different. But at least with the images and descriptions below, you will have an idea of the look and what to expect from your finished style.

Defining Goddess Locs

Goddess locs are simply locs with curly ends, which give them a soft, natural flow. Adding curls at the ends creates a flowing and free-spirited look. Often, goddess locs are made using human hair for a natural, lightweight feel with less tangling, allowing the curls to move effortlessly. However, some people also use synthetic hair to recreate this look, which is cost effective but might be more likely to tangle.

The term goddess locs was first coined by Dr. Kari Williams, a renowned trichologist and stylist to celebrities like Eva Marcille, Willow Smith, and Jennifer Hudson.

Boho Locs - The Protective Style

Boho locs don’t have a clear origin story. The term and style developed naturally online and represent a more relaxed, "bohemian" twist on faux locs.

The term boho refers to the carefree and slightly "messier" look. Unlike goddess locs, which are neater with curls only at the ends, boho locs feature curly or wavy pieces throughout the loc, not just at the tips.

You can place human hair strands at different parts of each loc - 1, 2, 3, or 4, depending on your preference, time, and budget. The more strands you add, the more hair you will need!

Boho Goddess Locs: A Bit of Both

If you love both styles, boho goddess locs might be the perfect blend. Boho goddess locs combine both styles, with curly or wavy pieces throughout the locs as well as at the ends.

For this hybrid style, many people choose human bulk hair to achieve an extra natural, flowing effect. Popular curl patterns for these locs include:

  • Water wave
  • Loose water wave
  • Body wave
  • Natural wave
  • Wet & wavy

Maintenance Differences

Goddess Locs: Goddess locs require relatively low maintenance due to their neater structure with curls only at the ends. The main task is finger-detangling the curled tips to prevent tangling, which is straightforward and quick. This style holds its shape well, needing only light care to avoid frizz and matting.

Boho Locs: Boho locs, with added curly or wavy strands throughout, need more regular maintenance. Finger-detangling the additional strands along the length is essential to keep them from matting or frizzing. Even with human hair, these strands need attention similar to bundles or wigs. Regular moisturizing and occasional light detangling will ensure the style looks great without excessive frizz or tangling.

A Few Tips for Both Styles:

Moisturize Regularly: Use a leave-in conditioner, a light curly hair mousse, or light oil sheen spray to keep the curls looking fresh and hydrated.

Protect at Night: Wrapping your locs in a silk or satin scarf helps prevent frizz and prolongs the style’s lifespan.

Comb with Care: If you decide to comb the curls to detangle them, try to avoid the main locs. Comb the waves from the bottom and work your way up.

Final Tips for Choosing the Right Style

If you’re ready to dive into locs but still deciding which to choose, consider your lifestyle and personal style preferences:

Low-Maintenance Lovers: Goddess locs might be a perfect fit for those who prefer minimal upkeep and a long-lasting, neat structure.

Those Who Love a Natural, Effortless Vibe: Boho locs embrace a messier, textured look—even if they require a bit more attention.

Jorie Hair’s Pre-Made Boho Locs are a Great Choice

While boho locs are known for on trend look, they can be time-consuming to create from scratch, often taking anywhere from 3 to 7 hours, depending on the width, length, and number of curls or waves added. That’s why I made it my mission, to pre-make boho locs for my customers, that are time saving without compromising on style. They are lightweight (even the super long length) and can be DIY'd or salon installed.
